Ukraine has submitted an application for the inclusion of borscht in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has submitted a nomination dossier "Culture of Ukrainian borscht" for inclusion to the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
"The nomination dossier "Culture of Ukrainian borscht cooking" is finally heading to Paris. This is an important procedural step, which is the beginning of the formal promotion at the international level of the unsurpassed element of Ukraine's intangible cultural heritage for inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List", - said First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Japarova.
Ukrainian Chef Yevhen Klopoteno initiated the official recognition of borscht as a Ukrainian national dish. "When you go to a restaurant abroad, you will most likely see “Borsch (Russian soup)” on the menu. In October 2020, thanks to the support of PJSC" Chumak "borsch was included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and on March 30 Ukraine applied to UNESCO for recognition of borsch as a Ukrainian dish at the world level", - said the head of the Institute of Culture of Ukraine, chef Eugene Klopotenko.
The Ukrainian nomination dossier consists of more than 700 pages of documentary evidence that the borscht originates from Ukraine, is closely intertwined with Ukrainian culture in such things as wedding and funeral traditions, and is widely consumed throughout the country. “Ukrainian borsch is a Ukrainian national dish that has no competitors. It is enough to manipulate on the basis of the "Russianness" of borscht, because you cannot change the truth. Borsch is ours”, - said Oleksandr Tkachenko, Minister of Culture and Information Policy.
The application will take two years to process. During this time, Ukraine must demonstrate that borscht is truly a value for the whole country. “We have Borsch Festivals, Borsch streets and monuments to borscht, Borsch Day and a TV show about borscht. We have to show that borscht really unites Ukraine”, - said Yevhen Klopotenko.
The list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO already includes Ukrainian Petrykivka decorative painting, the tradition of Kosovo painted ceramics and Cossack songs of Dnipropetrovsk region.
